Bar Scholarship Rules and Requirements

The Austin Black Lawyers Association (ABLA) is pleased of offer bar exam preparation scholarships for graduating or recently-graduated African American or Black law students in the greater Central Texas area at our inaugural ABLA Scholarship & Awards Gala: Crowned for Justice. ABLA honors the legacy of its 45-year existence and will honor that legacy while investing in the future through bar exam scholarships and awards recognizing trailblazers.

The bar exam scholarship is open to applicants who exhibit community service; good scholastic standing; evidence of leadership and extracurricular involvement; and financial need.

Applicants may complete the application online OR download the application and send in all required materials to president@austinblacklawyers.org

Applicants must submit the following materials:
(1) The application;
(2) A personal statement;
(3) Law school transcript (official or unofficial);
(4) One letter of recommendation (preference for letter from law school faculty or staff);
(5) A photo (optional).


All materials must be submitted by 11:59 PM on Wednesday, December 10, 2025.

The personal statement is an opportunity for the applicant to include information that will assist the committee in reaching a thoughtful decision. Examples of such information include a description of your personal strengths, your contributions through community service, your connection to the Central Texas area (i.e., from Central Texas area, attended law school in Central Texas, or plans to practice in Central Texas); a description of any special circumstances that may have affected your academic performance, or your personal or family history of educational or socio-economic disadvantage.

Applicants will be presented the scholarship at the ABLA Scholarship & Awards Gala on Saturday, December 13, 2025 at 6:30 PM.

Before receiving scholarship funds, recipients will be required to submit proof of enrollment or intent to enroll in a bar exam preparation course.
